Every year, the DICE Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in video games. They’re designed to recognize games across various genres and mediums. Many video game leaders gather to celebrate their collective achievements and sometimes lament the struggles of the industry.

After watching the awards, there were many amazing standouts. Let’s take time to appreciate the fact that COCOON was nominated for six different awards, including Game of the Year. It’s always nice to see an indie game get lumped in with major triple-A titles.

Many nominations and winners were predictable. Baldur’s Gate 3 won Outstanding Story; no surprise. Spider-Man 2 won the Action Game. Super Mario Bros. Wonder won the Family Game.

There were a few surprises. WHAT THE CAR? Beat Honkai: Star Rail for Mobile Game. Miles Morales beat Astarion for Outstanding Achievement in Character. Diablo 4 won the Online Game.

Finally, we arrived at Game of the Year. Baldur’s Gate 3 was likely to win this award, but it wasn’t a foregone conclusion. Spider-Man 2 and Tears of the Kingdom were on that docket too, and it could have gone either way. Even when you look at who got the most nominations, it was tight.

Baldur’s Gate 3 received seven nominations and won four categories. Spider-Man 2 did one better with nine nominations and six wins. Tears of the Kingdom was way behind with five nominations and only one win. If I had to pick the biggest loser of the DICE Awards, I’d say it was Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, with four nominations and zero wins.

Whether these awards are something you typically follow or not, it is interesting to see what developers and industry heads think are the most outstanding games in their genres. It tells us a lot about what they think works and doesn’t work.

Congratulations to Larian Studios! Their game joins other outstanding titles like Elden Ring, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, and yes, even the Untitled Goose Game.
